About Greg Milligan

I am passionate about helping others be aware of and reduce EMF pollution. I own and operate EMF Safe Services. We:

  • Inspect for EMF exposure
  • Mitigate EMF exposure
  • Recommend ways to lessen EMF exposure.

A Short History

Before Inspections

30 years before becoming an EMF inspector, I worked as an electrician and owned an electrical company in Monterey, California. This gave me a good working knowledge of wiring, building codes, and electrical theory. I then became a networking technician. As such, I worked as a consultant to various companies, including Western Digital, Intel and McGraw Hill. I installed and configured Ethernet cables, switches, routers and wireless access points, and setup & configured networks, etc.

Manmade EMF radiation is a product of wireless technologies and a bi-product of electrical wiring. My career choices had placed me in the midst of both types of EMF radiation production.

Introduction to EMFs

Around 2001, a family friend shared that she was suffering from EHS (Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity). I had not, until then, heard of it. Some associates didn’t take her seriously. They felt it might be psychosomatic or a product of an overactive imagination. I wasn’t sure. I myself had been suffering from RLS (Restless Leg Syndrome) for a few years. I began to wonder if my RLS might also be related to EMF exposure, which I had worked around for decades. So, I started to research EMFs and health.

It seemed the telecommunication companies were (and still are) going to great lengths to keep pertinent information about the possible dangers of EMF radiation from the general public. Research grants on EMFs had been defunded, etc. Nonetheless, groups of scientists and doctors came forward to state a growing concern about the effects of EMF radiation on health. The World Health Organization (WHO) later classified RF radiation as a Group 2 Carcinogen (possibly cancerous to humans). There were also correlations made of EMF exposure and anxiety, sleep disorders and a myriad of other health problems.

My First Mitigation

I took me a few more years, but I finally decided to do something about my personal EMF exposure. I cleaned up our EMF footprint at home. I pulled in Ethernet cable, which we used in lieu of WiFi. We still use WiFi, but on a more limited basis. When I measured it, I was shocked by how much radiation we were living in daily. Metering revealed our bedroom and my office were both viper’s pits of electrical and magnetic radiation and dirty electricity. The living room was another area I put some effort into cleaning up, since we hang out in there quite a bit. The cleanup primarily consisted of replacing specific electrical devices and doing some simple rewiring. I reduced the electric and  magnetic radiation and dirty electricity by an order magnitude.

Becoming an EMF Inspector

After our EMF cleanup, my RLS got better. It didn’t completely go away, but it became manageable. I felt I was a success story. I decided to start helping others become aware of their EMF exposure and showing them how to mitigate it. Maybe I could help them before symptoms showed up. I am now a professional member of the Building Biology Institute. I use many of their inspection techniques and guidelines, along with those from other organizations. I employ a cross section of research and standards, to steer my efforts.

Mitigating EMFs

Besides identifying the high levels of EMF radiation, I have become adept at reducing them in practical ways. Many reductions come from simple and easily implemented changes, often free of cost. These changes are typically made during the inspection. As an electrician I am comfortable doing simple rewiring. As a networking technician, pulling Ethernet and configuring routers is also in my wheelhouse. Others remediation can be more challenging and require a strategic approach. In these cases,  I can consult with builders, plumbers or electricians called in to do additional work. Often sub-contractors do not understand EMF radiation or how to reduce it. As a trades-person myself, I speak the language, and know how to get the job done with minimal stress.

A Balanced Approach

I think it is important to keep an even and balanced approach when identifying and discussing EMFs. I am not an alarmist. I take a measured approach to identifying and mitigating possible EMF threats. I share what is the middle ground of agreement by researchers and experts in the field. I would love to help identify and reduce your EMF exposure.
